Richmond Chess will host three week-long chess day camps for K-8 students in the greater Richmond area.  These chess camps are intended to provide scholastic chess players with an opportunity for focused chess play/instruction as well as to make new friends.

Schedule

Chess day camp activities will begin each day at 10:00am and continue until 3:00pm.  Daily check-in begins at 9:30am.  Early drop-off at 9:00 is $5 and late pickup is available until 5:00pm at the rate of $10 per hour.  During this extra time, children can choose to play chess in the classroom or to play in the gymnasium, all under adult supervision.  Please allow an extra 15 minutes on the first day in order to complete forms onsite.

Information for Parents

Campers will be supervised at all times during the day.  Parents or other designated responsible parties must sign students in and out of camp each day.  Campers will be accompanied by camp staff at all times while at camp.  Parents may accompany their children, but must sit in the rear of the class on a space-available basis.

Campers should bring their lunch and snacks.  Chess pieces, boards, scoresheets, and pencils will be provided.  Campers may bring chess clocks if desired.  Class assignments will be based on camper's prior rating and/or placement test result.  The student - teacher ratio will not exceed 15:1.  Campers stay with the same group for the entire week.  Additional instructors will be assigned as necessary.  Desired t-shirt sizes cannot be guaranteed for late registrants, but every effort will be made to obtain the stated preference.

Tuition, Cancellations & Changes

PLEASE NOTE: For campers receiving the early registration discount, all registration fees must be received by the end of the early registration period for that camp, else late registration fees apply.

A full refund minus a $35 service fee is given if the cancellation request is received during the early registration period for the camp session.  Once late registration has begun for that camp session, refunds are not available.

Switching sessions is permitted on a space-available basis.  A $15 administrative fee is assessed for any change after the late registration period begins for that session.

NOTICE: The camp which had been scheduled for St. Mary's from July 9-13 has been moved to St. Edward's.  St. Mary's is under construction for the summer and won't be available for use as a camp venue.

 

Camp Instructors

Brian Sumner is the chief instructor for Richmond Chess and was named 2004, 2005, and 2006 Virginia Chess Coach of the Year. 

Additional experienced chess instructors and counselors will be available at the camp to assist your child.
